Identity theft case study 1 - Counterfeit checks lead to discovery of credit card fraud

A covered member called Fraud Solutions after finding her checking account mysteriously overdrawn.  Her dedicated Licensed Investigator discovered that eleven counterfeit checks had been passed to retailers for just over $3,000.  Additional investigation showed that besides more bad checks being passed, a credit card account had also been opened.

We advised the member to cancel her checking account immediately, file a police report, obtain from her bank an affidavit of fraud, and await the fraud restoration packet being sent to her by Fraud Solutions.

Upon receiving the member’s necessary documents for restoration, Kroll immediately placed fraud alerts, and notified Social Security, the FTC, and the US Postal Inspector. Our Licensed Investigator then began the dispute process with the eleven retailers that had accepted the counterfeit checks.

Some checks were successfully blocked from collections; those that did reach collection agencies before being identified as fraudulent were tracked by Fraud Solutions via telephone and mail.  The victim’s identifying documents, the police report, affidavits, and the statement of dispute were sent to the appropriate individual agencies.

While the check fraud issues had been handled, the victim received a credit monitoring alert (via her Fraud Solutions program), about a collection account charge-off of $5,321.00 that had been reported. The original creditor was identified; Kroll immediately contacted the collection agency and disputed the fraudulent credit card.  After the collection agency did not respond to two subsequent disputes, Kroll contacted the Attorneys General in the state where the victim resided and in the state where the collection agency was headquartered.  Fraud Solutions ultimately received an apology for the victim from the collection agency for their violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

Final resolution was achieved nine months after the member’s case was first opened.
